We can all do with a little extra cash in our pockets, can’t we?
Below is a list of side hustle ideas – many of which I’ve tried myself. I’ll keep this list updated as I discover more ideas and try new things, and I’ll give me honest feedback on what works for me and what doesn’t.
Feel free to click on the links to read more in-depth articles. Some of the links are affiliate links and I’ll earn a small commission if you use my link to sign up (at no extra cost to you).
Now let’s make some money 🙂
Deliver packages for Amazon Flex
I’ve been making a decent amount of money from Amazon Flex. The average shift is four hours for a four-door hatchback car like mine, and the pay works out to about $29 per hour. Just be aware that you will have to cover your petrol and wear and tear expenses from this.
You’ll need to live and work in an area where Amazon Flex is available – check the list of areas currently available on this web page.
The sign-up process is free but can take a few weeks, so it’s best to get that in as soon as you can.
You can sign up for amazon Flex here.
Pick up passengers for Uber
I know you were expecting this one.
I wanted to drive for Uber when I first arrived in Australia but you have to have an Australian driver’s licence for at least 12 months before you can get started.
Nowadays, my friends keep telling me how much they are making on Uber and I’m jealous! It’s just not practical for me right now with a toddler and a messy car.
If you want to sign up for Uber, ask people you know perhaps on Facebook or even in forums for a referral link. There are always specials running and apparently sometimes there are offers like a $1000 bonus for your 30th ride if you use someone’s code!
If you want to sign up without a code, you can do so here.
Offer ironing and/or laundry services
Australians always need help around the house, which is why laundry and ironing services are becoming a very popular and lucrative way to make extra money.
Just advertise your services on Facebook marketplace or drop a flyer in your neighbours’ mailboxes to let them know what you are up to. I’ve heard that the going rate is about $2 per item for ironing.
I suggest checking out the prices at your local laundromat and pricing your laundry service at a similar or slightly better rate.
Grow plants to sell
If you have green fingers, then think about growing plants in your garden or home and selling them. You can sell them from your front yard by putting them outside with a sign saying how much a plant costs.
For example, your sign could say: Plants $5 each.
Otherwise try selling them on Facebook marketplace.
You can grow whatever you like, or you could specialise in a certain type of plant and join a plant society that sells plants. I know the local Bromeliad society is very popular and has plant sales on at the community centre every now and then.
If you have a little space and can grow a lot, look into growing plants and selling them on to nurseries for bulk sales.
Do surveys with reputable companies
Everyone cringes when they hear surveys and I know why. There are way too many scam survey shops out there that waste your time and sell your info.
But there’s one place I use that is for real. I don’t do surveys often because I don’t always qualify with the right criteria, but when I do they always pay me promptly and the work is fun and easy.
The company is called Testing Time, and you can sign up with them here.
I’m always interested in finding out about side hustles and ways to make extra money in Australia. If you have and more ideas or feedback for me, please fill in this contact form and let me know. Thank you!
